Gran Canaria Hosts the Kite and Wingfoil World Championship – GKA Kite World Tour

Gran Canaria becomes the epicenter of water sports with the World Championship of Kite and Wingfoil in the Big Air discipline. From July 9 to 13, the top 70 riders worldwide compete at Salinas de Tenefé for the world title.

Organized by Club Deportivo Canakite Experiences and the Royal Canary Sailing Federation, this championship is distinguished by the high quality of its participants. Manuel Martínez, club president, highlighted that it’s about quality over quantity, with Gran Canaria offering perfect conditions for a spectacular competition.

Joergen Vogt, president of the global organizations GKA and GWA, emphasized Gran Canaria’s ideal conditions for water sports, noting the predictability of the wind compared to other locations worldwide. This ensures a perfect setting to crown the Big Air world champions in both disciplines.

Francisco José García, mayor of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, thanked the administrations for making this event possible, emphasizing the opportunity it presents for the municipality not only from a sports perspective but also economically and touristically. The coast of San Bartolomé de Tirajana becomes the international focal point, showcasing its potential and opening spaces for new sports practices.

Notable Riders

Among the local competitors, Ancor Sosa is a promising young wingfoil rider with high expectations. In kitesurfing, Tenerife natives Jeremy Burlando and Lorenzo Casati, along with Daniela Moreno from Fuerteventura, aim for the podium. Casati, double Spanish champion and 2022 Red Bull King of the Air winner, expressed his excitement to compete in Gran Canaria.

Competition Development

Favorable conditions allowed the start of the first wingfoil elimination rounds, with American Christopher Macdonald standing out for his score. Evaluation criteria focus 70% on height and 30% on technical freestyle, raising the competition level in this edition.
