Best time of year to kitesurf in Tarifa
Rebels Kiteschool Tarifa shares when to visit to enjoy the best wind, weather and kitesurf conditions.
Introduction
Tarifa is known as the wind capital of Europe. With more than 300 windy days each year, wide beaches and two dominant winds, it offers ideal conditions for kitesurfers of all levels. Depending on the season, the wind, temperature and atmosphere change, so picking the right period helps you get the best out of your trip.
1. Spring from March to May
Spring is one of the most popular seasons for kitesurfing in Tarifa. Days get longer, temperatures rise and both Levante and Poniente appear regularly.
- Wind: around 15 to 35 knots
- Water: cool but comfortable with a 4/3 wetsuit
- Crowds: moderate
- Best for: beginners, intermediate riders and freestyle practice
Spring offers reliable wind without the heavy crowds of summer. It is one of the best times to book lessons or focus on progression.
2. Summer from June to September
Summer in Tarifa is warm, busy and full of wind. The Levante appears often and brings strong, dry air from the east.
- Wind: around 20 to 40 knots
- Water: warm, often between 18 and 22 degrees
- Crowds: high, especially in July and August
- Best for: advanced riders, big air and long days on the beach
Beginners can still learn during summer, usually on softer Poniente days or in safer areas selected by the instructors.
3. Autumn from October to November
Autumn is calm, sunny and still very windy. It is a favorite season among local riders and long term visitors.
- Wind: around 15 to 30 knots
- Water: still warm during October
- Crowds: low
- Best for: progression, relaxed sessions and wave riding
Autumn offers a great balance of warm days, consistent wind and plenty of space on the beach. It is ideal if you want to learn quickly in a relaxed environment.
4. Winter from December to February
Winter in Tarifa is mild compared to most of Europe and the wind remains active. You can still kitesurf often, with fewer people around.
- Wind: around 12 to 30 knots
- Water: cooler, usually needing a 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit
- Crowds: very low
- Best for: intermediate riders, long training periods and quiet beaches
Winter is a good time for riders who want peaceful sessions, consistent wind and a break from colder northern climates.
5. Choosing the best time for you
You can kitesurf in Tarifa all year, but the best time depends on your goals. Here is a quick overview to help you decide when to visit.
